We are living in turbulent times. Societal polarisation, social inequalities and global crises are putting social cohesion to the test. Technological upheaval and geopolitical conflicts are exacerbating the challenges facing our societies – while our everyday lives are becoming increasingly individualised, not least because of changing forms of digital communication. How much solidarity is possible under these circumstances – and how can it succeed?
At its annual conference, the German Ethics Council will discuss what solidarity means and what conditions must be met for people to act in solidarity. The conference will also address the challenges involved in realising solidarity in various areas of life: How can solidarity be achieved across national and cultural boundaries? What responsibilities do we have towards future generations and other living beings? How can solidarity be promoted by mobility and urban planning? How can social segregation be prevented so that people not only live side by side, but truly together? What demands does intergenerational solidarity place upon us – for example, in healthcare or pension policy? How can a fair balance of interests between the generations be accomplished? And where are the limits of solidarity and of reasonable expectations of solidarity?
One topic that ties together many of these questions and is subject of repeated and constant debate is that of the migration society. It will serve as a basis to reflect on the conditions of successful solidarity – at societal, communal and individual level.
The annual conference will bring together experts from academia, politics and practice to examine solidarity from different perspectives – normative, empirical and structural. Various artistic contributions and a hands-on exhibition by volunteers on the topic of “Solidarity in everyday life” will make solidarity a tangible experience during the conference.
