Moral theologian Jochen Sautermeister appointed to the German Ethics Council

The President of the Bundestag, Bärbel Bas, has appointed moral theologian, psychologist and philosopher Jochen Sautermeister to the German Ethics Council with effect from 1 March.

Sautermeister was nominated by the Federal Government to succeed Armin Grunwald, whose term of office expired on 13 February 2025.

Prof. Dr rer. soc. Dr theol. Jochen Sautermeister is Professor of Moral Theology at the Faculty of Catholic Theology at the University of Bonn. He studied theology, psychology and philosophy. Sautermeister has a diploma as a marriage, family and life counsellor and practised as such alongside his university work in Munich from 2008 to 2015. Jochen Sautermeister holds a doctorate in social and behavioural sciences, as well as in Catholic theology.

In addition to his involvement in the German Ethics Council, he is also a member of the Central Ethics Commission of the German Medical Association, a deputy member of the Central Ethics Commission for Stem Cell Research at the Robert Koch Institute and a member of the Expert Council for Protection against Sexual Abuse and Experiences of Violence at the German Bishops’ Conference.
